How SERVPRO of Woodland Hills Uses Moisture Meters

When having a restoration company at your home or property to repair water damage you may have noticed they pull out a colored device. It is normal that you possibly wondered whether these devices are actually doing something or there for show. This tool is called a “moisture meter”.
Moisture meters are a piece of technology that you will see throughout all SERVPRO franchises. You may have even seen these online or your local hardware store.
There are two standard moisture meters. One is a resistance meter, these ones have pins. The other kind are capacitance meters, these are pin less.
SERVPRO of Woodland Hills technicians use both types of meters. Capacitance meters are best used on materials that can’t be penetrated with pins. These moisture meters are nice because they won’t leave any damage to the affected material. Although pin meters may leave slight physical damage they are great at measuring moisture in wood. Pin meters have peaked metal detectors that are inserted into the material. They measure moisture by measuring electrical currents between the pins.
