Salvaging vs. Replacing: What to Consider After Water Damage
6/12/2024 (Permalink)
If you're dealing with water damage, don't hesitate to contact SERVPRO for expert assistance and reliable restoration services.
Water damage can wreak havoc on your home or business, leaving you with the daunting task of deciding what to salvage and what to replace. As a leading provider of water damage restoration services, SERVPRO® understands the importance of making informed decisions during such challenging times. In this blog post, we'll explore the factors to consider when determining whether to salvage or replace items affected by water damage.
Extent of Damage
The first step is to assess the extent of the damage. Items submerged in water for an extended period may suffer irreversible damage, especially porous materials like carpets, drywall, and insulation. Hardwood floors, electronics, and upholstered furniture are also prone to severe damage. If the damage is extensive or poses health risks (such as mold growth), replacement may be the best option.
Value and Sentimental Importance
Consider the value and sentimental importance of the items affected by water damage. Items with sentimental value, such as family heirlooms or irreplaceable photographs, may warrant efforts to salvage them, even if the damage is significant. Conversely, items of lesser value or those easily replaceable may be better off replaced.
Cost of Restoration
Assess the cost of restoring damaged items compared to the cost of replacement. In some cases, restoration may be more cost-effective, especially for items with high monetary or sentimental value. However, if the cost of restoration exceeds the value of the item or if the item can be easily replaced at a lower cost, replacement may be the better option.
Health and Safety Concerns
Water damage can compromise the structural integrity of buildings and pose health risks due to mold and bacteria growth. Items that cannot be adequately cleaned and sanitized may pose health hazards if retained. Additionally, water-damaged electrical appliances and wiring can pose safety risks and should be replaced to prevent accidents.
Professional Assessment
Seek the expertise of a professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO to assess the damage and provide recommendations. Our trained technicians have the knowledge, experience, and specialized equipment to accurately evaluate the extent of water damage and recommend the most appropriate course of action for salvaging or replacing affected items.
The decision to salvage or replace items after water damage depends on various factors, including the extent of damage, value and sentimental importance, cost of restoration, health and safety concerns, and professional assessment. By carefully considering these factors, you can make informed decisions to minimize losses and restore your property to its pre-damage condition. If you're dealing with water damage, don't hesitate to contact SERVPRO for expert assistance and reliable restoration services.
Repair or Replace? How to Assess Water-Damaged Items
2/22/2024 (Permalink)
Restoration experts, such as our SERVPRO® team, can provide valuable insights and guidance on the best course of action.
Water damage can wreak havoc on belongings, leaving homeowners faced with the dilemma of whether to repair or replace affected items. As seasoned professionals in the restoration industry, we often encounter numerous scenarios involving water-damaged items and understand the considerations in deciding between repair and replacement. Let's explore what can be salvaged after water damage and when it's best to opt for replacement.
1. Quick Assessment
Upon encountering water-damaged items, it's essential to conduct a quick assessment of the damage. Items vary in material, resilience, and susceptibility to water. Evaluate the extent of the damage, considering factors like the item's material, sentimental value, and the severity of water exposure.
2. Factors Influencing Salvageability
Some materials, like solid wood or certain metals, can withstand water damage better than others. Porous materials such as fabric, upholstery, or particleboard may be more challenging to salvage. The duration and level of exposure to water also play a crucial role. Items submerged in water for an extended period are more likely to suffer irreparable damage. Clean water from a pipe leak might pose fewer risks compared to contaminated water from floods or sewage backups. Contaminated water most often renders items unsalvageable due to potential health hazards.
3. Salvaging Strategies
- Professional Restoration Services: Consider consulting restoration professionals, such as SERVPRO of Woodland Hills, for items of high value or sentimental significance. Our team has the expertise and highly advanced equipment to repair water-damaged items effectively.
- Thorough Drying and Cleaning: For less severe damage, thorough drying and cleaning might salvage certain items. Use fans, dehumidifiers, and gentle cleaning solutions to remove moisture and dirt.
- DIY Repair: Some items, like wooden furniture or non-electrical appliances, might be salvageable through DIY efforts. Quick action and proper drying techniques are crucial.
4. When Replacement is the Best Option
- Severe Damage: Items extensively damaged or warped beyond repair, such as swollen particleboard furniture or irreparably warped electronics, might warrant replacement.
- Risks Involved: Items exposed to contaminated water or those prone to mold growth may pose a variety of risks, making replacement a safer choice.
- Cost Consideration: Sometimes, the cost of restoration exceeds the item's value or replacement cost. In such cases, opting for replacement might be cheaper and more practical.
5. Professional Opinion
When uncertain about the salvageability of valuable or irreplaceable items, seek professional opinions. Restoration experts, such as our SERVPRO® team, can provide valuable insights and guidance on the best course of action.
In conclusion, the decision to repair or replace water-damaged items depends on several factors. A quick assessment, considering material type, the extent of damage, and potential risks involved is highly important. While some items can be salvaged through professional restoration or DIY efforts, others may require replacement for safety, cost, or irreparable damage. Prioritize safety, especially when dealing with potentially contaminated items, and seek expert advice when in doubt about salvaging water-damaged belongings.
How Bad is Your Water Damage?

A Basement Flooded with Water
Water damage can be devastating to your property and your health. Mold can start growing within 24-48 hours of water damage, so it's important to act quickly. SERVPRO is here to help 24/7/365.
We specialize in water damage restoration and emergency water extraction. We have the professional water removal equipment and drying equipment to get the job done as quickly as possible. We live by our slogan, "Like it never even happened."
There are three categories of water damage:
- Category 1: Clean water
- Category 2: Gray water
- Category 3: Black water
Category 1 water is the least contaminated and can be caused by a broken clean water line. Category 2 water is moderately contaminated and can be caused by a leaky dishwasher or washing machine. Category 3 water is the most contaminated and can be caused by a sewage backup or flood water.
Even if your water damage starts out as Category 1, it can quickly become Category 2 or 3 if it is not cleaned up quickly. Dirty carpet or soil can also contaminate your water damage.
The longer water stands on your property, the worse the contamination will become. This means that SERVPRO will need to use more aggressive measures to clean your structure and property. In some cases, soft furnishings, such as carpet, padding, or furniture, may need to be discarded for your safety.
Water damage can be expensive, but it's important to remember that preventing mold growth is even more expensive. If you have water damage, call SERVPRO immediately at 818-882-4556. We will help you get your property dry and safe as quickly as possible.
How Fast Water Damage Occurs
8/15/2023 (Permalink)
Water Damage In Building
When water damage strikes, it spreads quickly and can cause extensive damage to your property. Within minutes, water can absorb into walls, floors, and furniture, causing finishes to bleed and flooring to swell. Over the next few hours, drywall will swell and break down, metal will tarnish, and furniture will crack and split. Dyes and inks from fabrics and paper will bleed and stain, and a musty odor will fill the air.
If you experience water damage, it is important to act quickly to mitigate the damage. The longer you wait, the more extensive the damage will become. Call a SERVPRO immediately to get your property back to normal as soon as possible.
What Are The 3 Types Of Water Contamination?
9/22/2022 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO if you have a water damage. "We are always here to help"
Have you had water damage in the past? In a water damage situation you not only have to act fast but it also helps to know which type of water contamination has affected your property. Knowing the cause of loss helps determine the category of the loss. Knowing the category of the loss benefits in creating the proper cleanup plan.
Category 1
Category one is known as a clean water loss. Meaning it is not contaminated water. An example of a clean water loss is if the sink is left running and overflows. If category 1 water is left sitting for too long or it travels through insulation it can turn into a category 2 or even 3 loss.
Category 2
Category two water is known as gray water. It is higher than category 1 due to having some levels of bacteria. A category 2 loss could be caused by a dishwasher or washing machine. With category 2 water it is necessary to sanitize and vacuum after the loss is cleaned up.
Category 3
Category three water is grossly contaminated water. An example of a category 3 loss would be if a sewer line broke or a toilet overflowed. A category 3 loss has high bacteria and chemical levels.. Having a cat 3 loss on your property means that everything the water came in contact with needs to be removed. A category 3 loss must be sanitized and vacuumed.
Water Damage to Wood Flooring

When a water loss in your home happens your flooring can get wet and hold moisture. Water damage that has to be cleaned can cause you floor to need to be repaired or even replaced. The following are a couple steps that can help you understand what will have to be done to get your floor to preloss state, if possible.
Flooring contactors try to discourage home owners from getting hard wood flooring installed in places of the home that are more humid like the bathroom, laundry room or basement. This is because when a large amount of water is present or high humidity it may cause the wood to expand, warp crackle and start to separate.
In engineered flooring the attached underlayment is made to expand and contract when it comes in contact with normal humidity changes. This helps not damage the solid wood layer on top. However many flooring contactors will decide that engineered wood flooring is not a good choice in humid and wet areas. In these areas vinyl, concrete or tile is recommended.
SERVPRO specializes in drying out all kinds of flooring by using our pumps, vacuums, desiccants and fans. SERVPRO of Woodland Hills has the right knowledge in how to dry out each kind of flooring properly, if it is possible to salvage. Our technicians know when flooring is able to dry in place or have to be replaced. To help prevent mold growth, mildew or potential odors we can also deodorize and sanitize all flooring
Introducing Our Equipment

If your property is affected make sure to call SERVPRO of Woodland Hills to help you restore your property. 818-882-4556
The following is a deeper look into the equipment SERVPRO would use on your property.
AIR MOVER:
Air movers work well with dehumidifiers. The air movers are commonly used to help the moisture particles in the room circulate for the dehumidifier to take in. The air movers help dry out affected materials.
DEHUMIDIFIER:
Dehumidifier are commonly used to pull moisture out of the air. This helps dry out the materials.
FLOOR MAT SYSTEM:
The floor mat system is used on hardwood floor to help dry it out. This helps to save floors that are showing signs of damage and to prevent buckling.
DESICCANT:
The desiccant is similar to the dehumidifier. The desiccant takes the air that contains moisture, dries it and distributes the dry air back into the affected area. We use desiccants in hard to dry places like a crawl space.
WATER EXTRACTOR:
Water extractors are used to extract standing water. This helps remove the water from surfaces and allows us to dry it out properly. This can help save flooring like carpet from secondary damages.
AIR SCRUBBER:
The air scrubber helps control the environment. It filters some of the odor, debris, dust, mold spores and any other airborne particles.

When a water damage occurs often moisture causes baseboard separation from walls. This is an indication that there could be water damage affecting your wall and the wall cavity inside. Sometimes the water damage loss is caused by broken pipes, condensation from A/C, broken appliance lines, etc.
In most water losses, saturated drywall becomes soft and no longer holds the nails in place. When this occurs, the baseboards are removed from the wall and inspected for mold growth then left off to dry. SERVPRO might drill holes in the drywall under the baseboard line or, drywall may be cut to remove the affected drywall and expose the framing. The framing will then be properly dried using specialty air movers before the drywall is replaced.
SERVPRO of Woodland Hills is IICRC certified in mold removal and applied structural drying. We have 26 years of experience in helping our customers make it "Like it never even happened."

Got water damage...call SERVPRO! At 818-882-4556
Water damage can be a huge issue in a person’s home and can often cost thousands of dollars. While sometimes water damage is obvious (such as a leaky faucet, toilet overflow or burst pipe), more often than not, it is quite difficult to locate. With that in mind, here are some common signs of water damage in a home to keep an eye out for:
- Odors
There are many different potential causes of an odd smell in a person's home, but one that most people don’t think of is water damage. However, when water stagnates and is hidden over time, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria, like mold. This will quickly begin to smell and has been described as an unpleasant odor.
- Mold Growth
In addition to smelling bacteria growing, people can sometimes see it with their own eyes. Spores in the air can find their way into hidden areas such as behind the washing machine and underneath the refrigerator, and if water and dust are also present there, mold can begin to grow. It will often be fuzzy or discolored. However, mold can be difficult to see sometimes as it doesn’t always appear in large patches, and even just a small bit of mold can signify some water damage.
- Does something look odd?
If you want to check for water damage, the structural aspects of the home are the first place to look. Walls, ceilings and floors are places that can give owners an indication that there is water damage. Look for stains, sagging, swelling, or cracking among other abnormalities.

Insurance Claims for Water Damage to your Home - SERVPRO
2/22/2021 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Woodland Hills @ 818-882-4556, a restoration company you can trust since 1995!
Flooding & water damage are not what the majority of homeowners expect to face. When it does happen, you might be at a loss for how to deal with it, especially when it comes to insurance claims.
The following will help walk you through how to file a claim;
Review Your Insurance Coverage- Review insurance documents. Locate the phone number for your insurance company’s claims office. If you can’t find it on any paperwork, then it should be on their website. Before you call, try to have your policy available for reference.
Be Calm- You need to be able to talk to the claims adjuster (the insurance representative who will discuss the details with you) in a way that is clear & concise. You will not be able to do that if you are upset.
Keep Your Details Brief & Straight to the Point- Give the claims adjuster the facts. Unless they ask for details, keep it as short as possible, giving them only the information they need to understand the situation. There are rules & regulations that govern insurance coverage, so you do not need to try to persuade the adjuster over the telephone.
Have Proof- Pictures of your dishwasher overflowing or flooding around a door are definitely proof that can be used to help make your case. Receipt from a plumber or information from the city or county about the cause of the damage will also be very helpful in getting the claim processed.
Mitigation- If you need to mitigate the damage (stop it from getting worse), the insurance company may make a recommendation for a company. It is ONLY a recommendation, so you can contact another restoration company if you prefer.
CALL SERVPRO 24/7 to help you dry down the loss and get you back to good.

Don't let water damage become something more. Call now 818-882-4556
Sometimes moisture causes baseboard separation from walls. This is a good indicator that there could be water damage affecting this specific wall and the wall cavity inside. Often the loss is caused by leaky pipes, condensation, faulty appliances, etc.
In this case, a refrigerator line leaked causing the inside side of the wall to swell and the water-saturated wall caused the baseboards to shift away from the wall. Saturated drywall becomes soft and no longer holds the nails in place that are used to attach the baseboards to the wall. When this occurs, the baseboards are completely removed from the wall and inspected for mold growth. In most cases, we will either drill holes in the drywall under the baseboard line or, a flood cut is then performed to remove the affected drywall and expose the framing. The framing will then be properly dried before the drywall is replaced.

Prevent Water Damage from Water Heaters
3/11/2020 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Woodland Hills for a free water damage inspection at 818-882-4556
Water heater failure is a common issue. But you can help prevent hot water heater problems, including a leaking water heater, with these 4 simple steps for water heater maintenance:
- Check your water heater’s age. If your water heater reaches its life expectancy, the risk of a slow leak or sudden burst increases. Therefore, your efforts to inspect and maintain the water heater should increase.
- What is an anode rod and why should you care? A “sacrificial” anode rod is installed in water heaters to avoid corrosion of the tank. To determine if your anode rod needs to be replaced, it should be inspected once every two years and at least annually once the warranty has expired.
- Clean out your water heater regularly. Regular water heater maintenance should include removing sediment by flushing the tank every six months. Water heaters can be flushed by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base of the water heater. Tip: Turn off the power and run hot water until it cools before you try to flush the tank since the heated water may be 130 to 140 degrees or more.
- Get an annual inspection. Don’t forget to have a plumbing professional inspect your water heater’s shut-off valve and all piping. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a sign that more severe damage is coming.
- Water heater failure is one of the top 5 sources of residential water damage, according to an IBHS study. As a matter of fact, water heater failures cost an average of $4,444.00 per incident after a deductible was paid. If you think your water heater is not at risk, keep in mind that 69%of all water heater failures result from a slow leak and/or sudden burst. Don’t get stuck with cold showers and costly water damage repairs due to water heater failure. Reduce your risk with these steps for avoiding water heater failure.

Black water, the most dangerous of the three, is water that has come into contact with fecal matter, a haven for harmful bacteria and disease-causing pathogens.
- Hidden Damage: Water damage is not always obvious. Sometimes it is found inside walls and under flooring. If you attempt a DIY restoration and fail to diagnose hidden damage, the resulting issues could be extreme…and expensive.
- Peace of Mind: Hiring a professional restoration company gives you the peace of mind knowing you have done everything in your power to rectify the situation.

Floods are the most common natural disasters. Even if you don’t live in a high flood area there is still a chance that flooding can happen to your property. Below you can read more about the different types of flooding to help you understand your own risk:
1. Flash floods - occur when heavy rainfall causes a fast rise of rapid-moving water that sweeps everything in its path.
2. Coastal floods - are caused by strong winds or storms that move towards a coast during high tide.
3. River floods - gradual riverbank overflows caused by heavy rainfall over an extended period of time.
4. Urban floods - occur when the drainage system in a city or town fails to absorb the water from heavy rain. The lack of natural drainage in an urban area can also contribute to flooding.
5. Pluvial floods - form in flat areas where the terrain can’t absorb the rainwater, causing puddles and ponds to appear.

Water damage cleanup tips form SERVPRO of Woodland Hills -
- Don't enter any water damaged areas without conducting a thorough safety check. It may not be safe for you to enter or remain in the building. • Water damage can weaken the structure of the building. If the ceilings are sagging, stay out. • Be sure the electricity has been shut off. Submerged electrical appliances and electronics can cause electrical shock.
- Remove standing water, use towels to soak up smaller pools of water on furniture, counters, and other surfaces. If the area is flooded with more than a foot or two of water, wait for a professional water damage remediation team like SERVPRO of Woodland Hills to arrive.
- Remove area rugs from and spread them outside to dry. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs to prevent carpet stains. When wood furniture is exposed to excessive moisture, the stain can transfer to the carpet leaving permanent marks. Remove smaller items such as books, toys, chairs, and other objects from the area.
